I started running again yesterday. I continued the trend this morning. Truthfully, neither run was more than a half mile, nor was the timing close to my personal best, but to complete the exercise and run back down the stairs into my apartment, past my roommate engaged in virtual recreation, through a kitchen filled with empty snack bags and stale pasta, into my own room, feeling my heart race, and my breaths escape me. Did I feel awake and stimulated?
After years of existing in smoke filled rooms and fits of pseudo-euphoric laughter, I have finally squelched the desire to turn off, shut down and stretch out.
The adventure is returning to my bloodstream, and arousing my spasmodic senses. With so many distractions to keep us comfortable in our cocoons of unconscious complacency, it is refreshing to traverse the marketplace without staring into shop windows or checking out the beautiful women plastered tall on exalted billboards.
To let the ephemera rush by you, and solely soak the air around you, and the ground underneath your feet.

Circolando com ‘Mansarda’ no CCB

A ideia deste espectáculo é explorar a casa nos seus diferentes tempos e rituais quotidianos

‘Mansarda’ é a mais recente produção da companhia de teatro Circolando, que se estreou ontem no Centro Cultural de Belém, em Lisboa. ‘Mansarda’ é o último projecto do ciclo temático ‘Poética da Casa’, iniciado pela companhia em 2006, e é seguramente um dos melhores espectáculos que vimos este ano. Se puderem, passem no CCB até Domingo, dia 25 de Outubro. Os bilhetes custam entre 12,5 e 15,00 Euros.

O Túnel da Evolução

Assistia eu à vidinha quotidiana a partir da janela do meu escritório quando, no meio da rua, um funcionário municipal munido de uma picareta, levantou a tampa do esgoto. Fazia-se acompanhar por dois “especialistas”: o primeiro carrregava um pulverizador, o segundo prestava-lhes provavelmente apoio moral.

Estremunhados pela súbita claridade, centenas de baratas castanhas agitaram-se nas paredes do poço sanitário. Perplexo, recuei dois passos enquanto os técnicos pulverizavam metodicamente a colónia de insectos que, em nenhum momento, entrou em pânico.

É uma calma realista: há séculos que as nossas cidades habitam a sociedade das baratas. Não somos sequer o inimigo. Somos cúmplices biológicos. Os arquitectos de um ecosistema partilhado.

É um ciclo familiar, que as baratas conhecem bem. Amanhã será apenas mais outro dia no interminável túnel da evolução.

Life is just better here. I can consolidate myself into quotes, groups and pictures. I can form opinions of people before I ever get the chance to meet them (…). I stake claim to a virtual wall, replete with emoticons and one dollar gifts. I am able to compulsively keep track of everyone I have ever encountered and turn them into my friends.
[The tangible world is cruel.](…) I realize that communication is a tedious and elaborate process that requires good hygiene, presentation and social skills. On a Tuesday morning in June, a Vancouver man named Salim and his beloved decided to get married. They tracked down a minister and a few hours later in Choklit Park, realized they needed a witness. I was crossing the street when I saw three people waving me over. “Sorry, I’ve got a meeting,” I said, when they asked me to help. “It will take five minutes,” the minister assured me. “We’ll say the vows, you’ll sign the registrar and then you’ll be off.” So in Choklit Park – overlooking Yaletown’s office towers and million-dollar condos – Salim and his bride made their solemn oaths. I joined these strangers in a bubble of unexpected, collective happiness.
